Portraits

Two portraits appear in the margins of this book. Both are reproduced under the Creative Commons licenses stated below, which require attribution; the credit lines here and in each figure caption are given to satisfy that condition.

The share-alike term on the Wickham photograph applies to that image, not to the surrounding text. The book’s prose remains CC BY 4.0; the photograph remains CC BY-SA 4.0 and must carry that license in any redistribution.

Portraits not included

Slots for Jenny Bryan (7  Git and GitHub for Solo Developers), JJ Allaire (15  Reproducible Reports with Quarto) and Yihui Xie (16  Rmd Workflow: Conversions and Tables) were planned and are not filled. No freely licensed photograph of any of the three was found on Wikimedia Commons, and their personal and employer pages state no license terms permitting reuse. A photograph being publicly visible is not a license.

One route remains open and was not taken. rOpenSci licenses its site content CC BY 4.0 except where otherwise noted, and hosts a headshot of Jenny Bryan in its own image tree at ropensci.org/img/blog-images/2017-12-08-rprofile-jenny-bryan/. That notice appears to cover it. The photograph was probably supplied by the subject rather than created by rOpenSci, so whether the site-wide grant extends to it is worth confirming with rOpenSci before use.

Anyone offering a portrait for those chapters, or for Frank Harrell, Roger Peng, Karl Broman, Carl Boettiger or Friedrich Leisch, is invited to contact the author. It must be CC BY, CC0, or supplied with the subject’s explicit permission, and this section must record the photographer, the source and the license before it ships. Please contact the author for removal if any attribution here is incorrect.
